Lacock is the sort of village where the walk from the car park to the first cup of tea takes longer than you planned, largely because you keep stopping to look at things. Stone and timber-framed cottages line streets with very little modern clutter, which is why film and television crews return here so often, and why you'll recognise corners of it before you've ever visited. Within about two miles you'll find eight places to visit, five spots to eat and drink, five shops, two places to stay and somewhere to fill an afternoon with an activity, so it works equally well as a half-day stop or the base for a longer stay.

A good few hours might start with the Abbey Walled Garden, where the planting rewards a slow circuit, before you wander out to find Harry Potter's Parents House on Church Street and see how ordinary it looks in real life. The Lacock Bakery is worth timing your morning around, and the Stables Tearoom handles lunch without fuss.
