Melksham is a working Wiltshire town rather than a showpiece one, and that is much of its appeal. Within about two miles you'll find 19 places to eat and drink, three places to stay, four useful services, a couple of things to visit, two activity venues and a shop, which makes it a practical base as much as a destination in its own right. If you're travelling through this corner of the county, or staying nearby for a few nights, it's the sort of town where you can sort out lunch, a bed and a bit of a wander without much planning, and where the choice leans towards familiar, straightforward places doing what they do well.
A good few hours here might start with a look at Melksham United Church, then a coffee or a proper sit-down meal at Newmans or The Water Meadow, both easy walking distance from the centre. If you'd rather keep it simple, Lee's Fish and Chips and Ocean Fish & Chips both do a reliable takeaway, and The Foresters Arms is worth knowing about for a pint and a slower end to the afternoon.
