This working market town sits on the River Avon in Wiltshire, just a short drive from Chippenham and Trowbridge.
It's a proper lived-in place with real character rather than somewhere designed primarily for visitors, which is exactly what makes it worth exploring if you're in the region.
Melksham has genuine Saxon roots, and you can trace that history as you walk around the town centre. The parish church of St Michael is worth visiting for its medieval architecture, while the riverside areas offer pleasant walks where you can see people going about their daily lives. The high street has independent shops and cafes that tend to feel more authentic than the heavily touristed alternatives nearby.
The surrounding countryside is excellent for walks along the Avon Valley, and you're positioned well between the Cotswolds and Bath. It's close enough to Chippenham for day trips but far enough that you get a real sense of Wiltshire's landscape. If you're interested in industrial heritage, Melksham's textile mill history is worth knowing about, though much of that infrastructure has been repurposed or quietly integrated into the modern town.
This is the kind of place where you'll eat well at local restaurants without needing to book months ahead, and where locals actually chat in the shops. It rewards a slower pace and genuine curiosity about how a real market town functions day to day.
