Chippenham

A working market town that genuinely functions as the centre of local life rather than performing for visitors, Chippenham has maintained its importance since medieval times when it thrived on wool and cloth trading.

That history shows itself clearly in the stone buildings throughout the town centre, particularly in the parish church of St Andrew, which has an impressive tower and deserves time spent exploring its medieval interior.

The high street mixes independent shops, cafes and restaurants with familiar names, and you'll find actual local produce at the market when it runs. It feels like a place where people genuinely live and work, which gives it a different character from many Cotswolds destinations. Leave the town centre and the countryside opens up quickly, with good walking routes through farmland and woodland. The River Avon nearby provides access to riverside paths if you prefer water-level exploring.

As a base it works well for the wider region. Corsham and Castle Combe make easy day trips, while Cirencester and other major Cotswolds towns are reachable for longer outings. Bath sits less than two hours away, so you can combine both areas without too much trouble. The train station connects to Bristol and beyond, which means you're not entirely reliant on driving if that matters to your plans.
