You'll find this small hamlet just outside Chippenham in north-west Wiltshire, where it serves as a quieter alternative if you want a base for exploring without staying in the busier town centre.
Pewsham is really a scatter of cottages and farms rather than a proper village, so it's the kind of place you'd pass through rather than spend a whole day in, but it's worth knowing about if you're heading this way.
The real appeal lies in what surrounds it. Chippenham, just a short distance away, is far more substantial and has genuine historical depth. It was important enough to be a royal residence under Alfred the Great, and you can still see medieval elements running through the town. When the Great Western Railway arrived in 1841, it transformed Chippenham into a proper market town, and Victorian architecture is scattered throughout.
From Pewsham you're well-positioned for exploring the Cotswolds, though technically you're just outside the official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Bath is only 13 miles south, making this a useful overnight stop if you're travelling between there and the Cotswolds. The River Avon offers pleasant walking routes, and Chippenham's market and local shops give you a real sense of how English market towns actually work—less polished than some tourist hotspots, but genuinely lived-in and functional.
