This small hamlet sits within the parish of Lacock in Wiltshire, just a few miles south of Chippenham and right on the edge of the Cotswolds area.
It's part of a wider settlement that's largely owned and maintained by the National Trust, which means the whole area has kept its genuine, lived-in character rather than feeling restored or polished up.
Notton itself is quiet and rural, giving you a real sense of how these communities have evolved over centuries. The wider Lacock parish includes several other hamlets and the nearby village of Bowden Hill, so there's plenty to explore on foot if you want to venture beyond Notton proper. The River Avon runs through the area, and the landscape is typical rolling Wiltshire countryside with good walking routes connecting the different settlements.
If you're visiting during the right season, Lacock village hosts a popular annual scarecrow festival that raises funds for the local primary school, and it draws visitors from across the region. The proximity to Chippenham makes this a convenient stop if you're touring the broader area, and it works well as a quieter alternative to some of the more visited Cotswolds destinations. It's the kind of place where you genuinely experience rural English life without the crowds that can overwhelm other spots in the region.
