If you're keen on cycling through proper countryside, the Wiltshire Cycleway section around Bowden Hill and Pewsey Vale delivers something genuinely special.
This stretch takes you through landscape that genuinely shifts as you ride – you're not just pedalling through the same scenery repeatedly.
Bowden Hill itself is a proper climb, but it's worth the effort. Once you're up there, you get sweeping views across western Wiltshire – all those fields and distant woods spread out below you. Push east into Pewsey Vale and things open up completely. You're looking at rolling chalk downs and open farmland that feels like it's barely changed in centuries. Watch for the White Horses carved into the hillsides too – they're centuries old and still remarkable to spot from the road.
The route winds through traditional villages where you'll find old churches and decent pubs if you need to stop and rest your legs. There's genuine history threaded through here – ancient pathways and Roman influences are visible if you know what you're looking for. From Bowden Hill, Lacock is basically on your doorstep, famous for its abbey and well-preserved medieval character, so it's worth getting off the bike and wandering about. Head further east and Pewsey itself is a friendly market town with proper facilities. It's a proper way to understand what makes Wiltshire tick, and you control the pace entirely.
