If you want to venture beyond the central Cotswolds villages, this circular cycling route through Wiltshire offers a wonderful way to explore the region at a leisurely pace.
The route follows generally quiet lanes through rolling countryside, taking you past everything from prehistoric earthworks to medieval market towns. You'll also have chances to spot one of Wiltshire's famous White Horses carved into the hillsides.
Devizes serves as an excellent base or stopping point, and the town itself is worth spending time in. The Kennet and Avon Canal runs through here, complete with an impressive flight of 29 locks that showcase some remarkable industrial engineering from centuries past. The historic Wadworth Brewery is another worthwhile visit if you're interested in local heritage and traditions.
From Devizes, the cycleway connects to several other interesting towns, so you can easily plan a day ride or a longer tour. Marlborough lies along the route, famous for its unusually wide high street, while Bradford on Avon offers a charming canal-side setting. The combination makes this a flexible route whether you're looking for a short outing or a more ambitious cycling adventure. It's a genuine chance to experience a different side of England's heritage away from the more crowded tourist trails.
