Devizes is the kind of place where you can leave the car for the day and still not run out of things to see. Within a couple of miles of the centre you'll find around 45 places to eat and drink, 32 shops, ten places to visit, three activity spots and a handful of services, which makes it an easy base whether you're here for an afternoon or staying overnight — there are two places to stay close by. The mix leans towards independents rather than chains, so browsing tends to turn up something you weren't expecting, and most of it is walkable from one end of town to the other.

A good few hours might start with coffee and something from the counter at The Silk Mercer, then a slow wander through the shops, taking in Urban Rustics for homeware and gifts and Spirit for a rummage. Lunch works well at Table at No. 31, or you can hold out for a longer, more relaxed sit-down at The Pelican Inn. If you're staying into the evening, check what's on at the Wharf Theatre before you head home.
