You'll find Marlborough right in the heart of the Cotswolds, positioned conveniently between Bath and London.
This is a substantial market town with real historical weight—it's been significant since Neolithic times, and if you venture just a few miles out, you'll discover Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, two of Britain's most important prehistoric monuments sitting on your doorstep.
The town's wealth came from the wool trade, and that prosperity is still evident in the High Street, one of the broadest in England. The Georgian and Victorian buildings lining it now host independent shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can pick up local produce and crafts. There's a castle here too, though what remains today is mostly earthworks and grounds that house a well-regarded public school. You can visit the Marlborough College Museum to understand more about the town's past and local heritage.
Marlborough works brilliantly as a base for exploring the area. The surrounding downland provides plenty of good walking with views across open fields, and you're within easy reach of the archaeological sites that make this region remarkable. Devizes, another market town worth visiting, is just a short drive away. If you're traveling between the Cotswolds and Salisbury Plain, Marlborough makes a natural and rewarding stopping point.
