This small settlement sits in Wiltshire, just beyond the Cotswolds' eastern edge, offering a quiet slice of rural England that many visitors miss entirely.
There's not much here in terms of attractions—Coate is essentially a hamlet with a handful of properties scattered across open countryside—but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place you'd wander through on a longer walk, where you can experience the landscape and peace that drew people to this region centuries ago.
The main reason to visit is Coate Water, a reservoir nearby that's been developed as a nature reserve and offers excellent birdwatching throughout the year. Walking paths circle the water where you might spot various waterfowl and raptors depending on the season. There's a visitor centre with facilities and information about the area's ecology if you want to learn more about what you're seeing.
Coate works best as part of a broader exploration of north Wiltshire. Swindon, the county's largest town, sits about six miles north and has more conventional amenities and attractions if you need them. The hamlet itself is peaceful and rural, best suited to those who appreciate countryside walks and wildlife rather than shops or restaurants. It's a genuine working landscape rather than a tourist destination, which gives it a certain authentic quality that you won't find in busier areas of the region.
