This small Wiltshire village sits just beyond the main Cotswolds boundary, though it's worth venturing out here if you're tackling the Cotswold Way or exploring the region's fringes.
You'll find an unpretentious working community rather than somewhere geared up for tourism, centred around a Norman church that deserves a brief visit if you're in the area.
The real draw is what surrounds it. Bishops Cannings sits in an ideal position for accessing the Cotswold Way, that excellent 102-mile footpath running along the escarpment. Whether you're attempting the whole route or just a section, this makes a sensible place to join in or take a break. The landscape here opens up beautifully across the Vale of Pewsey, and from the higher ground on clear days you can see across large stretches of Wiltshire.
The village has what you need — a pub and basic shops — which matters when you're restocking during a long walk. Devizes is about fifteen minutes away if you need more substantial amenities, with Marlborough roughly twenty minutes in the other direction. If you're planning to walk the Cotswold Way, Bishops Cannings gives you a far quieter entry point than many of the busier starting spots you'll find further north.
