This is where photography as we know it began.

The Fox Talbot Museum sits within Lacock Abbey, a medieval nunnery that was converted into a family home, and tells the story of William Henry Fox Talbot's revolutionary work. In the 1830s, Talbot conducted his pioneering experiments on site, developing the negative-positive photographic process that would become the foundation for modern photography. The museum's interactive displays walk you through how his innovations functioned, and you can see his earliest cameras and equipment alongside original photographs from his most significant discoveries.

The abbey itself rewards exploration beyond the museum. Wandering the cloisters and grounds gives you a tangible sense of the centuries of activity that happened here—from its time as a working nunnery to its later life as a private residence. What makes this place distinctive is how it merges scientific history with authentic medieval architecture, allowing you to experience Talbot's groundbreaking work within the actual spaces where it occurred.

The village of Lacock spreads around the abbey and deserves time on its own. It's a National Trust village that's been featured regularly in films and television. If you need more facilities or want somewhere larger to stay, Chippenham and Melksham are both nearby and offer additional amenities.
