Ashton Under Hill is a small village at the foot of the hill that gives it its name, and it makes a quiet base rather than a busy day-trip destination. It suits walkers, people who like lanes and long views, and anyone happy to let an afternoon unfold slowly. Come on a weekday and you'll often have the footpaths largely to yourself.
