Tetbury is a market town that rewards slow wandering. Within about two miles you'll find 35 shopping places, 18 spots to eat and drink, 12 services, six places to stay and a couple each of visitor attractions and events and culture venues — enough to fill a day without ever needing to drive between them. The mix is unusual for a town of this size: independent homeware and interiors shops sit alongside butchers, delis and cafés, and the surrounding countryside is close enough that you can be on a footpath within minutes of putting your bags in the car.

A good few hours might start with coffee and something from the counter at Veloton, then a slow loop of the shops — French Grey for interiors, Dimity for gifts and finds you didn't know you were looking for, and The Sculpture Company if you want to see something you'll think about long after you've gone home. Break for lunch or pick up supplies at Jessie Smith & W.J Castle, whose butchery counter is worth a look even if you're only buying a pie. Finish with whatever's on at one of the town's events and culture venues, or simply another wander.
