Beverston

Beverston is a small village just south of Tetbury where the main attraction is Beverston Castle, a medieval fortress established in 1229 by Maurice de Gaunt.

While the castle itself is now a private residence and closed to visitors, the surrounding 693-acre estate is worth exploring from the public areas. You'll see an impressive collection of medieval stone ruins, later manor house additions, and various outbuildings that show how the structure evolved over nearly eight centuries rather than being abandoned and rebuilt.

Walking around the village gives you a real sense of medieval Cotswolds life through the fortifications and architecture. The estate's extensive gardens add to the appeal, and the overall quietness of the place makes it a good escape if you're tired of busier tourist spots. The way later generations adapted and expanded the original castle tells you something about how these settlements actually developed, rather than just imagining them from history books.

Tetbury, just a few miles north, is your nearest proper town if you need shops, restaurants, or other services. If you're in this part of the Cotswolds, Beverston fits well into an itinerary that explores how the region's great houses shaped their surrounding villages over the centuries.
