Malmesbury is the kind of place you can get to know on foot in an afternoon, then find yourself lingering over. Within about two miles of the centre you'll find 21 places to eat and drink, five to visit, three for shopping, three to stay and one for events and culture — a good spread for a town of this size, and enough variety that you can plan around your appetite rather than your itinerary. It suits visitors who like a slow morning, a proper lunch and somewhere to sit with a book afterwards, and it works just as well as a base for exploring the wider area as it does for a day trip.

A good few hours might start with coffee at Coffee #1, followed by a wander through the streets and a look round the Athelstan Museum, which is the obvious place to get your bearings on the town's history. From there, lunch could take you to Jackdaws or The Whole Hog, depending on how substantial you want it, with Amanda's another option worth knowing about. Round things off with a drink at The Red Bull before you head on.
