Elephant Cottage is a holiday retreat located in Doughton, a small village in the southern Cotswolds that offers genuine quiet and breathing room away from busier areas.
The surrounding landscape is defined by the region's characteristic stone buildings and open countryside, with gentle walks accessible right from your door and rolling fields stretching in every direction.
What makes Doughton work particularly well as a base is its balance between calm and convenience. Tetbury sits just minutes away—a functioning market town with working antique dealers, independent shops, and retail connected to the Highgrove Estate. The town has real substance to it, with a medieval market house and substantial church reflecting centuries of importance. For more extensive amenities and attractions, Cirencester is a short drive further on, home to the Corinium Museum, Abbey Grounds, and all the facilities you'd expect from a Roman town that's been continuously inhabited.
You're essentially getting two experiences at once. Step outside and you're in peaceful countryside with space to yourself. But you're never more than a few minutes from proper shops, restaurants, and cultural things to explore. It's a sensible choice if you want to experience the Cotswolds without either being isolated in a remote location or having to base yourself somewhere built for tourism. The setup gives you real flexibility in how you spend your time.
