Tackley sits in the quiet countryside north of Oxford, the kind of village you come to when you want lanes, fields and a slower pace rather than a busy high street. It's small, but you're not short of options: within about two miles there are six places to eat and drink, two places to stay, two places worth visiting and somewhere to fill an afternoon with an activity. That makes it a sensible base if you're touring this corner of Oxfordshire, and an easy detour if you're passing through and want somewhere unhurried to stop.

A good few hours here might start with a walk out towards Kirtlington Quarry, where the landscape opens up and the paths reward a bit of unhurried wandering, before doubling back for lunch. Sturdy's Castle sits handily for anyone arriving by car, while the Oxford Arms gives you the more traditional village pub experience. If you'd rather make an evening of it, The Dashwood is close enough to build a whole outing around, and Colliers Bed & Breakfast means you needn't rush the drive home afterwards.
