This working village spreads along the River Cherwell in north Oxfordshire, positioned conveniently between Bicester and Kidlington.
What you get here is genuine village life rather than somewhere geared up for visitors, which makes for a refreshing change.
The settlement has medieval origins, evident in the parish church with its interesting Norman features. The real appeal though is the river itself and the walking opportunities it offers. The meadows alongside the water are genuinely peaceful, and there's a good network of footpaths if you want to explore further. You'll occasionally spot anglers working the river too.
Tackley divides into two parts: the main village and Nethercott across the way. The High Street contains what you'd expect in a functioning community — a couple of pubs where locals actually spend time, a few shops, and everyday services. There's nothing commercialised about it, so you get an honest picture of how people really live in the Cotswolds rather than the polished version you find in better-known spots.
The location works well if you need bigger shops or more amenities, with Bicester close by for that purpose and Kidlington equally accessible. It serves as a solid base if you're interested in exploring the northern Cotswolds without dealing with the crowds that gather in the more famous villages.
