This Oxfordshire countryside location transforms what was once a busy industrial quarry into a designated nature reserve of real scientific importance.

You're literally walking on the bed of an ancient sea, and the exposed rock faces around you reveal geological layers millions of years old. The site is particularly significant for its Jurassic-era fossils, especially remains of early mammals, making it genuinely important for palaeontology research.

A network of paths takes you through different habitats—open grassland, scrub, and wooded areas—where you can spot local wildlife as you wander. While fossil collecting is restricted to preserve the site, there's something special about exploring ground where such important discoveries have actually been made. It's the kind of place that rewards a slower pace, whether you're keenly interested in geology or simply want to walk through a landscape shaped by both ancient natural forces and human activity.

The village of Tackley is very close by if you need refreshments or facilities, and the historic town of Woodstock is also within easy reach. Bicester offers another option for shops and services. The reserve works best as a contemplative visit—bring good footwear, allow time to really look at the rock faces and landscape, and perhaps pick up a guide to help you read the geological story beneath your feet.
