Heythrop sits in quiet countryside on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, a small settlement of estate houses and open fields where the pace slows the moment you turn off the main roads. It isn't a place for browsing shops and cafés — within about two miles you'll find just one place to eat and drink, one shop and one service — but there are four places to stay, three to visit and three more offering something active, which tells you what the area is really for. Come here to walk, ride, play a round or simply base yourself somewhere green with Chipping Norton and the Evenlode villages within easy reach.

A good few hours might start along the Glyme Valley, where the little river threads its way through meadow and woodland towards Wootton and Woodstock. Cyclists can pick up National Cycle Network Route 5, which runs close by and makes an unhurried way to explore the lanes. Golfers have a choice between Heythrop Park Golf and Chipping Norton Golf Club, and if you'd rather stay put afterwards, Heythrop Park Resort and the Cotswold Hotel & Spa are both on the doorstep.
