This area in the Frome Valley, about four miles southeast of Stroud, centres around a collection of small settlements that really capture what the Cotswolds is all about.

Chalford itself sits at the heart of what locals call the Golden Valley, and you'll find the hamlet of Chalford Green here, surrounded by the other villages that make up the parish including Chalford Hill, France Lynch, Bussage and Brownshill.

The valley has genuine history woven through it. During the cloth-making era, this stretch of the Frome was a working industrial landscape, and you can still spot evidence of that heritage in the old mills and workers' cottages dotted around. The stone buildings that characterize the area reflect both its prosperity from the textile trade and its long agricultural roots.

What makes spending time here rewarding is the combination of accessible countryside and the feeling of being away from the main tourist routes. You can walk along the valley floor, following paths that locals use regularly, and see how the villages relate to the river and each other. The steep hillsides around the valley create interesting contrasts of woodland and open fields, and the scale feels manageable rather than overwhelming.

Getting here is straightforward from Stroud, making it easy to combine with visits to other valley settlements or back to Stroud's market town amenities.
