About a mile outside Heythrop village in rolling Oxfordshire countryside sits a working golf course built within a proper country estate.

The real appeal here is the setting — the 18-hole course winds around a remarkable Grade II* listed house designed by baroque architect Thomas Archer in the early 1700s for the Duke of Shrewsbury. Even if golf doesn't particularly interest you, a walk through the genuine historic parkland is worthwhile for its own sake.

The course itself presents a decent challenge across various ability levels, and the clubhouse facilities are well maintained. The estate has developed into a complete country retreat, with accommodation available if you want to spend a weekend exploring the grounds. You're positioned in classic Cotswolds rolling countryside with good views across the landscape.

The location serves as an excellent base for visiting nearby villages. Chipping Norton lies about five miles north and offers Georgian charm along with several worthwhile pubs. Woodstock, roughly 15 minutes' drive away, is a market town centred around Blenheim Palace with plenty to occupy you. What works particularly well is that you can combine a round of golf with genuine countryside atmosphere and local history without the feel of a purely touristy experience.
