Cricklade is a small town where a short walk takes you past most of what you'd want to see, and the rest sits within an easy couple of miles. Within that radius you'll find nine places to eat and drink, eight places worth visiting, a couple of places to stay, a shop, a handful of everyday services and somewhere to fill an afternoon with an activity. It suits a visitor who likes an unhurried pace: somewhere to park up, wander, sit with a coffee, and treat the surrounding lanes and countryside as the main event rather than a checklist.

A good few hours might start at The Barista, where you can work out your bearings over a cup of something and watch the town go about its morning. From there it's worth looking in at the Catholic Church of St Mary, one of several buildings here that reward a slow look. Pick up something for later from James Butchers, then settle on lunch or dinner — Chutneys and Kavali both make a case for staying put.
