Cerney Wick

Cerney Wick sits just three miles south of Cirencester in Gloucestershire, making it an easy stop if you're exploring the central Cotswolds.

The village has grown considerably over the years but has managed to keep its genuine character rather than being absorbed into its larger neighbor.

The main draw here is the series of lakes and water sports facilities that developed from old gravel workings. You can walk or cycle around the water meadows, which come alive in spring and summer with active bird life. Several of the lakes are open for fishing, and there's a real sense of community around them. The village itself has a proper high street with local shops, pubs, and cafes where you can get a real feel for how people actually live here.

Historically, Cerney Wick won the Bledisloe Cup for best-kept village twice, most recently in 2001, which says something about the level of community pride. The older parts of the village around the church show typical Cotswold stone construction, though newer development is visible throughout.

If you're based in Cirencester, Cerney Wick makes a pleasant afternoon walk or cycle ride. The surrounding countryside offers gentle terrain that's perfect if you want to get out of the car without tackling serious hills. It's really a place that rewards taking your time and exploring at a slower pace.
