This working bridge crosses a quiet stream near Cerney Wick, just south of Cirencester, in an area where water shapes everything.
It's a straightforward structure—built for function rather than show—but that simplicity is exactly what draws people here. The stream feeds into the Cotswold Water Park, so you're in one of the region's most water-rich corners.
The real appeal lies in what surrounds it. The landscape opens up around you, with uninterrupted views across fields and along the waterway itself. It's an ideal place to stop during a longer walk, and if you settle in quietly, you might see kingfishers or other wildlife using the stream. The silence here is authentic—mostly just birds and the occasional rustle through the grass.
The bridge itself tells a practical story. For centuries, crossings like this have connected scattered communities and allowed livestock to move between fields separated by water. This particular structure doesn't have dramatic history attached to it, but it represents the deeper rural story of how people and animals moved through the landscape out of necessity.
Cerney Wick is extremely small, so you won't find anything to eat or drink at the bridge itself. South Cerney, the larger village nearby, has pubs and shops for when you need them. The bridge is straightforward to reach if you're already exploring the Water Park or traveling between Cirencester and Lechlade.
