Cirencester is a working market town rather than a museum piece, and that's much of its appeal. Within roughly two miles of the centre you'll find around 84 places to eat and drink, 66 shops, 20 things to visit and a further 10 activities, so a day here can be as busy or as unhurried as you like. The streets fan out from the market place in a way that rewards wandering, with independent traders, old stone frontages and the occasional reminder that this was once one of the largest towns in Roman Britain. A good few hours might start with coffee and a look around the shops, where Biggie Best is worth a browse for homeware and fabrics. Pick up something for later from Jesse Smith, the town's long-standing butcher, then head to the Cirencester Air Raid Shelter for a short, unexpected piece of local history. Round things off with lunch or an early dinner at Amore Mio or Piazza Fontana, both a short walk from the centre.
