Near the village of Ewen lies the remains of a Roman agricultural settlement that once functioned as a working farm complex.

The site preserves what was a substantial villa alongside various farm buildings, offering genuine insight into how people farmed and lived during the Roman period in Britain. Rather than grand monuments, this place tells the story of everyday life—the practical reality of running a rural estate two thousand years ago.

There's nothing reconstructed here and no visitor facilities. Instead, you're walking an archaeological site where the landscape itself becomes your guide. As you move across the fields, you'll notice subtle earthworks and gentle undulations marking where buildings once stood. It does require some imagination to picture it all, but that's genuinely part of what makes it compelling. You can stand there and think about the people who worked this land, which appeals particularly if you prefer a quieter, more reflective way of engaging with history.

For deeper understanding of Roman life in the area, Cirencester is a short drive away. The ancient town of Corinium Dobunnorum was one of Britain's largest Roman settlements, and the Corinium Museum holds an exceptional collection of regional finds. The village of Ewen itself offers pleasant walking, and you're well positioned near Kemble for train access or larger towns like Tetbury and Malmesbury if you need shops or restaurants.
