There's no high street to work your way along, no queue for tickets — just a quiet settlement where the interest lies in the lanes, the field edges and the handful of places that have grown up around them. Within roughly two miles you'll find six spots to eat and drink, one place to visit, somewhere to stay and a single services stop, which tells you most of what you need to know about the pace here. Come for a walk and a long lunch rather than a packed itinerary, and you'll get the measure of it.

A good few hours might start at Asthall Barrow, the burial mound that gives the area its oldest layer of history and a sense of how long people have been living on this ground. From there, the choice is largely a question of appetite. The Three Horseshoes and The Old Swan both make sensible stopping points for a proper sit-down meal, while Hops & Chops suits a lighter, more casual pause. Time it right and you'll walk off lunch before the light goes.
