W.J. Castle is a traditional family butcher and delicatessen at 111 High Street in Burford, in an old building about 40 metres from the Tolsey Museum. It belongs to the same family business as the Jesse Smith butchers of Cirencester.
The Hawes family bought the W.J. Castle shops in Burford and Northleach in the 1970s, after starting out with a single butcher's in Cirencester, and later took over Jesse Smith, a business founded in 1808. The third generation of the family now runs the company, and the Burford shop sells its meat alongside deli goods and cheese.
The counter is known for quality beef and for pork from outdoor-reared, free-range traditional breeds, along with sausages and other prepared meats. It is also a good stop for something to eat on the go: visitors recommend the freshly carved roast pork rolls, bacon sandwiches, pies, sausage rolls and Cornish pasties.
The shop is closed on Mondays. The Stone Gallery is about 75 metres along the High Street.
