Kington St Michael sits just north of Chippenham, a quiet stone village on the western edge of the Cotswolds where the lanes thin out into farmland and the M4 hums somewhere in the middle distance. It's not a place that asks much of you — there's no ticket office, no queue — but within about two miles you'll find nine places to eat and drink, three to stay, a couple of shops, two spots worth visiting, two service stops and somewhere to be active. That mix makes it a sensible base if you're touring the wider area, or a worthwhile detour if you're passing through and want something better than a motorway sandwich.

A good few hours here might start with coffee and something warm at Kington Cafe, then a slow wander to the Site of chapel, where the village's older history shows through. If you've brought your clubs, Chippenham Golf Club is close enough for a round without much driving.
