A short drive from Malmesbury brings you to Stanton St Quintin, a small village that sits above something rather special.
Just outside the settlement, an archaeological site marks where a chapel once stood, its history reaching back to Roman times. There's no standing building to explore here, but that's rather the point—what makes this location worthwhile is the chance to stand in a place where different periods of history have layered on top of one another, from Roman occupation through to medieval religious life.
Walking the gentle terrain around the site, you can reflect on how communities used this land across the centuries. It's a destination that suits a slower approach, particularly if you're drawn to archaeology or simply enjoy considering the deeper history woven into the Cotswolds landscape. Because there's nothing grand here demanding your attention, you'll find it far quieter than some of the more famous villages nearby, making it an excellent stopping point during a longer countryside walk.
The site works well as part of a broader exploration of the region. Chippenham is close enough for a convenient extension to your day if you want to see what else the wider area offers.
