For a deeper dive into Cotswolds history beyond the familiar stone villages, Windrush Camp offers something different.
Rather than impressive ruins, this archaeological site tells its story through the landscape itself. What remains are the subtle earthworks of a Roman camp, evidence of the military infrastructure that once threaded through this part of Britain. Historians think it likely served as a temporary marching camp or small fortlet, used by Roman legions passing through the region.
The low banks and ditches visible in the fields here give you a real sense of scale. Walking around them, you can almost picture the soldiers who occupied this spot, surveying a Cotswolds utterly transformed from what they knew. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow, thoughtful exploration on foot, where you can trace the ancient perimeter and appreciate how the Roman presence shaped this landscape. Wear decent footwear though, particularly if the ground's been wet, since it's an exposed countryside site.
When you've finished exploring, you're well positioned for the rest of the area. Burford, a proper working market town, lies just to the east and has good options for food and supplies. Northleach is a short distance west, home to the remarkable wool church, and Bourton-on-the-Water is equally accessible. Any of these make natural stops for refreshments or further wandering.
