Just outside the village of Westwell sits this nature reserve, a working landscape dedicated to protecting the local wildlife and plant life.
The reserve takes its name from the gorse that flourishes here, producing those striking yellow blooms across spring and into early summer. It's genuinely peaceful, with well-maintained paths threading through the habitat that give you plenty of chances to spot birds, butterflies, and various insects.
There's no visitor centre or fancy infrastructure, which works entirely in its favour. The lack of development keeps the place feeling calm and authentic, making it a real draw if you want to step away from the more trafficked corners of the Cotswolds. Whether you're someone who gets serious about birdwatching, a casual observer of nature, or just after some quiet time in open countryside, there's something here for you.
Once you've had your fill of the reserve, Burford is just a short drive away and worth the trip for lunch, coffee, or a browse through its independent shops and galleries. It's a lively market town with proper character and a solid selection of good pubs and cafes. If you're keen to explore more of that classic Cotswold village feel, Northleach is equally close and makes another straightforward detour from the reserve.
