This riverside village sits on the north bank of the River Windrush, just a few miles west of Burford, and makes a peaceful stop if you're exploring this part of the Cotswolds.
The village itself is small and agricultural in character, with stone cottages scattered along quiet lanes rather than gathered around a traditional high street.
The river is really what brings people here. The Windrush is one of the region's most attractive waterways, and Great Barrington gives you good access for walks along its banks. The water meadows nearby are particularly lovely in spring and early summer. If you're interested in local history, the village church is worth spending a few minutes with, and the surrounding countryside tells the story of centuries of farming life in the Cotswolds.
What makes this place useful is where it sits. Burford, a proper market town with shops, pubs, and restaurants, is only a short drive away and makes an obvious pairing with a visit here. The village itself is very quiet, especially outside weekends, so if you're after amenities or activities, you'll want to base yourself in one of the larger nearby towns. But if you're after a genuine sense of rural Cotswolds life without the crowds, Great Barrington delivers that well. It's the sort of place where a riverside walk and a good pub lunch back in town is the perfect morning out.
