Great Rissington is a genuinely quiet village of around 300 people, sitting four miles south of Bourton-on-the-Water in the heart of the Cotswolds.
The kind of place where you'll actually hear the birds rather than traffic.
The settlement clusters around St Paul's Church, a solid medieval structure that's been the community anchor for centuries. Along the lanes you'll find traditional stone cottages built from that distinctive warm honey-coloured Cotswold limestone, and there's a village pub where locals actually spend their time, plus a green that serves as the real centre of community life.
What really makes Great Rissington worth visiting is the peaceful countryside all around it. The walking here is excellent, with footpaths leading through rolling fields and connecting you to neighbouring villages, while the Windrush River adds to the gentle character of the landscape. There are holiday cottages and a few B&Bs if you want to base yourself here for a night or two.
In practical terms, Great Rissington works best as part of a wider Cotswolds trip rather than a destination in itself. Bourton-on-the-Water is close by if you need lunch or supplies, and Moreton-in-Marsh and Cheltenham are within easy driving distance. Come here for authentic village peace and to see how rural Cotswold life actually works, rather than expecting tourist attractions.
