This village spreads itself generously along Sherborne Brook, creating an unusual linear layout that invites you to wander its full length.
Throughout the settlement you'll encounter traditional stone cottages and farmhouses, many built from the honey-coloured local limestone that gives the Cotswolds its distinctive appearance. The brook runs directly through the heart of the village, remaining accessible and pleasant, while the surrounding countryside opens up into excellent walking routes that take you deeper into the region.
The settlement has documented roots going back to at least 1086, when it appeared in the Domesday Book as "Scireburne"—a name derived from the Old English for "bright stream." That same watercourse still anchors the village today, providing a peaceful focus for exploration on foot. Sherborne retains the quiet, working character typical of smaller Cotswolds villages, without the busier tourist atmosphere you'll find in larger centres nearby.
As a base for exploring further afield, it sits well within the region. Northleach, a larger village with more amenities and attractions, lies about three and a half miles away, and you're conveniently positioned for accessing the River Windrush valley. This makes Sherborne a strong choice if you're seeking genuine countryside atmosphere while wanting easy access to better facilities and the wider network of Cotswolds walks and villages.
