Toots long barrow sits just outside Kings Stanley village and offers a fascinating window into how this valley attracted people across thousands of years.

The barrow itself is a Neolithic burial mound built by Stone Age communities as a communal grave, demonstrating what they could accomplish with their available tools and knowledge. Walking around the mound gives you real insight into how seriously these early people took honouring their dead.
What makes the site particularly interesting is the Roman villa built remarkably close by. When the Romans arrived, they clearly recognised something valuable about this location—whether it was the geography, the views, or the established significance of the place—and constructed their own substantial settlement right nearby. You can see the remains of both structures, which means you're literally standing between two very different civilisations separated by centuries, both drawn to the same spot.
The barrow itself has impressive views across the valley, and there's something genuinely peaceful about being here. It feels separated from everyday life even though it's only a few minutes' walk from the village. The quiet, reflective quality of the site makes it a good place to spend time thinking about what these landscapes meant to the people who lived in them.
If you want more activity afterwards, Stroud is nearby with its busy markets and independent shops, offering a complete contrast to the calm atmosphere of ancient ruins.
