Up on Selsley Common, a short walk above Selsley village, stands The Rock—a viewpoint that makes the climb worthwhile.
When visibility is good, you can see across the Severn Vale toward the Forest of Dean, with the Stroud valleys laid out below. It's an ideal spot to pause and absorb the landscape, or to settle in with a picnic and spend a few hours. You'll often find locals here taking advantage of the open air and space to think.
The common has been used for grazing and walking for centuries, and that sense of history lingers as you move across the grasslands. Wild ponies still graze here, creating a feeling of genuine wildness despite proximity to villages and towns. The wider common offers plenty of room to walk further if you want to extend your time there.
Selsley village lies directly below The Rock and houses All Saints Church, which contains some fine early Arts and Crafts stained glass worth a visit. If you're looking for meals, coffee, or more substantial shopping, Stroud is only a short drive away. The market town has numerous cafes and hosts a well-regarded farmers' market on Saturdays, which can be a good reason to plan your visit around a particular weekend.
