Tench

in Somerford Keynes

When you're around Somerford Keynes, Tench Lake, also called Lake 32, sits right at the heart of the Cotswold Water Park.

It's the kind of place that works whether you want to be busy or just sit quietly by the water.

The lake has proper facilities for watersports. Paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, and open-water swimming are all available, with equipment hire and lessons if you're starting out. If you'd rather stay dry, there are walking and cycling paths that loop around the lake and give you proper chances to watch the wildlife and enjoy the surroundings. The whole Water Park came about through old gravel quarries gradually becoming this extensive network of lakes and nature reserves—it's a good reminder of how industrial sites can transform into thriving natural spaces.

What makes it work as a destination is that contrast. You get actual outdoor facilities and serious water-based recreation, but it feels quite different from the traditional stone villages you'll find elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Somerford Keynes is right there if you need anything, and Cirencester isn't far away if you want more restaurants, shops, or a bit of history to explore alongside your time on the water.
