Somerford Keynes sits right on the border between Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, at a point where the Cotswolds start to give way to gentler landscape.

This makes it a genuine escape from the better-known tourist trails. The Thames flows nearby at this stage of its journey—still young and fairly modest as it works its way through open countryside, which gives everything a real sense of calm and space.

The village itself rewards a slow wander. You'll find traditional stone cottages and a community that still functions as a living place rather than existing purely for visitors. The walking here is genuinely excellent. The Thames Path offers a chance to follow the river itself, or you can take any number of country lanes and footpaths that weave through the surrounding fields. The village has medieval origins, with the name deriving from the Keynes family who owned land in the area. You can trace this history through the parish church and several older buildings scattered about.

Just beyond the main village is the hamlet of Shorncote, which adds another layer to exploring. Location-wise, you're roughly equidistant from Cirencester, Swindon and Malmesbury, so you have real options if you want to use the village as a base and travel out to larger towns for specific shops or attractions. It manages that rare quality of feeling genuinely peaceful without ever feeling remote or difficult to access.
