Shorncote sits within the Cotswold Lakes, a sprawling network of 180 interconnected lakes spread across 42 square miles where Gloucestershire and Wiltshire meet.

What began as flooded marl extraction pits has transformed into the UK's largest lake system of its kind, creating a landscape that blends working countryside with nature reserve in equal measure.

The lakes are the real attraction here. You can sail, fish, or try water sports at designated areas, and there's a country park with a beach and play facilities if you'd rather take things at a slower pace. The whole region is exceptional for wildlife watching, especially if birds interest you—wintering species arrive in impressive numbers, and breeding populations are well established too. Several nature reserves throughout the area let you observe this activity without disrupting the habitats.

Water activities aside, this works well as a base for exploring the surrounding villages and the wider Cotswolds. Cricklade is just north, while Cirencester—one of the region's larger towns with proper shops, restaurants, and considerable history—sits about ten miles south. You'll find holiday accommodation around the lakes if you want to stay for a few days, and local wildlife trusts manage much of the land in partnership with communities, so genuine conservation work happens alongside the leisure activities. It's a place where you can be as active or as relaxed as you fancy.
