Just outside South Cerney, Shorncote Reedbeds is a nature reserve that forms part of the Cotswold Water Park.
It's quite different from the rolling hills you'll encounter elsewhere in the region—here you're in a wetland landscape where reeds stretch across your view and create a completely different atmosphere. The reserve is carefully managed to support wildlife, particularly birds, and it genuinely matters for conservation work.
If you're keen on birdwatching, bring binoculars and settle into one of the bird hides for some quiet observation. You might spot reed warblers, water rails, or if you're patient and lucky, a bittern. It's equally rewarding for a gentle walk. There's something calming about moving slowly through this environment, listening to the calls and rustles of wetland life all around you. The landscape here has an interesting past too. Like much of the Cotswold Water Park, these wetlands began as gravel extraction pits. Rather than being left as industrial scars, they've been thoughtfully restored into thriving habitats that now support species which might struggle in other places.
South Cerney is right on your doorstep, and Cirencester, the area's main market town, is just a short drive away. This makes Shorncote straightforward to fit into a visit, whether you're popping in for a couple of hours or weaving it into a longer day exploring the region.
