This nature reserve sits within the Cotswold Lakes system, one of Britain's most extensive freshwater lake networks.

The water bodies here were created from old marl extraction pits that have been transformed and now serve as carefully managed habitats protected by local wildlife trusts as part of broader conservation work across the region.

You'll find it's an excellent spot for birdwatching, whether you're hoping to spot winter visitors or breeding species. The combination of open water, reed beds, and surrounding woodland creates ideal conditions for seeing everything from common waterfowl to rarer passage migrants. The reserve is genuinely peaceful for walking and photography too, with calm water and natural surroundings that feel quite removed from the busier tourist areas.

The reserve straddles the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire border, with Cirencester to the north and Cricklade to the south providing convenient access points. Beyond the nature reserve itself, the wider Cotswold Lakes support sailing, fishing, and other water sports if you want something more active, and several pleasant villages nearby offer pubs and local amenities.

What really stands out is how well maintained and tranquil the place feels—you can sense you're in an ecologically important area that's been thoughtfully cared for. If you enjoy quiet natural spaces and watching birds without dealing with crowds, it's well worth setting aside time for a visit.
