This village sits in the Evenlode valley just a few miles north of Burford and takes its name from the ancient forest of Wychwood that once dominated the landscape.
You'll find it's one of three villages in the area with historical connections to this woodland, the others being Milton-under-Wychwood and Ascott-under-Wychwood, which makes it an excellent base if you want to explore the forest's heritage and get a real sense of the rural Cotswolds.
With around 1,200 residents, Shipton-under-Wychwood feels like a genuine working village rather than a tourist attraction. The community here has that peaceful, unhurried quality you're looking for if you've come to the Cotswolds to escape the busier spots. It's the kind of place where you can spend a day wandering the lanes, popping into the local pub, and getting a proper feel for how people actually live here rather than visiting a postcard version of village life.
Being close to Burford means you're well positioned to explore the wider West Oxfordshire area too. Whether you're interested in walking the old forest trails, visiting nearby towns, or simply settling into village rhythm for a day or two, this is a good place to base yourself if you want authentic Cotswolds without the crowds.
