This village lies in the Evenlode valley, just a short drive north of Burford, and gets its name from the ancient forest of Wychwood that once covered much of this part of the Cotswolds.

It's one of three villages with strong connections to that woodland heritage, so it works well as a base for understanding the area's history and character. With around 1,244 residents, it has kept the kind of peaceful, small-scale feel that draws people to Cotswolds villages in the first place. The landscape around it is ideal for walking and exploring, whether you're after gentle countryside strolls or just wandering through the village itself to get a sense of how rural England has developed over the centuries. There's a real sense here of continuity and settlement, the kind of thing you don't get from just passing through. The combination of accessible location and genuine village atmosphere makes it worth spending a few hours or longer, especially if you're interested in woodland history or want somewhere quiet to base yourself while exploring the wider valley.
