Lyneham

This small village sits about five miles southwest of Chipping Norton, positioned between the River Evenlode and the A361 road that connects Chipping Norton and Burford.

With a population of just 153, it's genuinely quiet—the kind of place where you're walking through working countryside rather than visiting somewhere built for tourism.

What you'll find here is straightforward: a collection of stone cottages and farms scattered around, which is exactly what you'd expect from the agricultural heart of the Cotswolds. There's nothing designed to pull in crowds, and that's really the appeal. Lyneham gives you a real sense of what the landscape is actually like, letting you walk the surrounding fields and footpaths without encountering organized tours or visitor infrastructure.

The River Evenlode to the southwest provides some pleasant walking routes if you want to explore on foot. Location-wise, it's convenient for using as a base to venture into larger settlements. Chipping Norton works well for this, offering market town amenities, independent shops, and all the facilities you might need. Burford is equally close by car and has its own appeal with stone architecture, cafes, and restaurants if you want somewhere to eat or spend time.

Really, Lyneham is for quiet walks and reflection rather than scheduled activities. It's the place to visit when you want to see how the Cotswolds actually function as a living landscape rather than as something packaged for visitors.
