Just outside Bourton-on-the-Water stands Salmonsbury, one of Britain's most significant Iron Age enclosed settlements.
From the late Bronze Age through the Iron Age and into the early Roman period, this was a major regional power centre—established long before the stone villages the Cotswolds became famous for.
At its peak, Salmonsbury functioned as a substantial fortified town complete with active communities, craftspeople, and trade networks, all protected by impressive banks and ditches. The grand structures have vanished, but the earthworks remain clearly visible across the landscape, revealing the extensive footprint of what was once an ancient city.
Walking here offers a genuine connection to the deep past. Tracing the perimeter helps you understand the scale of the place and imagine the busy settlement that thrived here centuries ago. It's quite striking to experience this Iron Age site after exploring so much medieval heritage elsewhere in the region.
The walk itself is straightforward and absorbing. Once you're done, Bourton-on-the-Water is just a short distance away for a rest and a meal, and other notable spots like Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford are equally convenient. This makes an excellent addition to a full day of exploring the area.
