Discover Bourton-on-the-Water

This Gloucestershire village sits right in the heart of the Cotswolds, built almost entirely from honey-coloured stone. What really sets it apart is the shallow River Windrush, which flows straight through the centre of the village and actually crosses the high street itself. Broad stone bridges link both sides, and on warm days you can wade through the water rather than just viewing it from the bank—it's one of those details that makes the place feel genuinely different from other Cotswolds settlements.

The Conservation Area is best explored on foot. You'll discover independent shops, traditional pubs serving proper food, and several good cafes dotted along the main street. The riverside walk works equally well in either direction: head upstream towards Bourton Hill if you want a more energetic outing, or follow the gentler downstream route for something more leisurely.

A few attractions are worth considering depending on your interests. The Model Railway Exhibition proves surprisingly absorbing, the Cotswold Motoring Museum appeals to vintage vehicle enthusiasts, and Birdland offers the chance to see exotic species in naturalistic settings. There's a regular farmers market too, and the surrounding countryside is excellent for walking.

Located about seven miles south of Cheltenham, Bourton works well as a base for exploring the wider area. Stow-on-the-Wold is a short drive away, and plenty of smaller villages and walking routes spread outward from here. It does get busy during peak season, but the river gives it something genuinely distinctive.
